What is the relationship between the new port of Chancay and fake medicines? Why does this concern us all?<\/p>\n
On November 14, 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte inaugurated the port of Chancay during a virtual ceremony from Lima. This new deep-water port is located about 80 km north of Lima, on the Pacific coast. The objective is to strengthen trade between Peru and Asia.<\/p>\n
This is the first port financed by China in Latin America: Cosco Shipping Ports holds 60% of the project shares, in partnership with Peruvian mining company Volcan Compa\u00f1\u00eda Minera, which holds the remaining 40%. The total investment is estimated at USD 3 billion.<\/p>\n
The port of Chancay aims to become the largest commercial port on the continent and a major logistics hub in Latin America. It initially targets 1 million TEUs per year, with plans to expand to 5 million TEUs annually, equivalent to 110 million tons of goods per year.<\/p>\n
Ships will sail directly from Chancay to Chinese ports – Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen- offering a 23-day direct connection to China, 10 days faster than from the port of Callao.<\/p>\n
Once goods arrive in Chancay, shipments (including illicit ones) can transit toward Europe via other South American ports or through indirect maritime routes – West Africa, Spain, the Netherlands-. Criminals often use these multiple stopovers to conceal the true origin of shipments and cover their tracks. More and more legal containers may be used along the way to carry fake medicines and medical devices.<\/p>\n
And the authorities? Overwhelmed! On average, less than 2% of containers are opened and inspected in major ports.<\/p>\n
The new port of Chancay raises questions about the potential use of this infrastructure for fake medicines and medical devices trafficking with China, especially as criminals are actively diversifying their routes and illicit trades (fentanyl, semaglutide..).<\/p>\n
This infrastructure indeed encourages the settlement of Chinese and Peruvian communities on both sides of the Pacific, thereby expanding connection networks \u2013 including criminal ones. Everyone wants a stake in the market.<\/p>\n
Local populations are on the front line, with increased exposure to fake medicines, local corruption.<\/p>\n
